Synoptic reporting

The Alberta WebSMR was designed to capture real time, post operative patient specific information through electronic synoptic reporting for the purposes of creating/implementing cancer surgery guidelines and improving patient outcomes.

Location: Alberta, Canada

Description

The WebSMR will be implemented for all Tumour sites in Alberta. Examples of synoptic templates developed include Breast, Colorectal, Malignant Melanoma, and Ovarian.

Scope

The WebSMR was built to automatically map SNOMED CT to the template data elements found in the standardized terminology. This will allow the comparison of data across jurisdictions. WebSMR will be migrated to a new synoptic reporting system called Synoptec. Synoptec incorporates an interface to Health Language Inc. which automatically supplies and updates the SNOMED CT codes. This interface will replace the WebSMR architecture.

How SNOMED CT will be used

SNOMED CT facilitates interoperable EHRs and is the pan-Canadian standard identified by Infoway as the best choice for reference terminology.
